I like to use different color markers to represent separate layers and pieces. Buy cosplay props and costumes from Destiny, Star Wars, Overwatch and other games and movies in cosplay and props store DesignedBy. Then you can cut it out and easily trace it onto foam. Just look at your reference images and draw it onto card stock or newspaper. Here is a photo of my Zhuque Mercy wing template. This is when all those reference images come in handy.
